Jack - The Author!

Tuesday I left work a bit early to go to Jack's Young Author Awards Ceremony! The festivities began at 1:30 and I slid in just before everything started, in time to search for Jack's face among this group of 1st and 2nd graders!
Each writer was called on stage and given a purple ribbon (I'm still getting used to purple and white as our school colors!!!). Jack looked SO proud. I unfortunately don't have any good pictures as I couldn't figure out what setting on our camera would provide enough light! I did manage to get one just before we headed out of school!
Sorry my blogging skills aren't too great...bare with me and turn your head to see Jack's book sitting in Mrs. Lockwood's bunch of books. Jack's book was called, "The Snake Learns to Talk!" He was not only the author, but the illustrator as well!
By the time the program was over, it was almost time to go home, so I got to take Jack (he LOVES being a "car rider!") Of course when he asked if he could have a McFlurry I couldn't resist!!!
I love all three of my boys, but I also treasure the one on one time I get with just one of my sons!

Showering Baby!

Today was Aunt Jackie's St. Louis baby shower thrown by Steve's mom and two sisters. They did such an awesome job. The decorations were too cute with diaper cakes on each table and get this, they had little menus on each place setting where you ordered your soup and salad and they served you...here is what I had - cauliflower soup and this strawberry pecan salad (delish!!!)
And here is proud mom to be, Aunt Jackie, loving her lunch!
Aunt Jackie and Uncle Steve were definitely SHOWERED with great gifts today...little Emma or Henry will certainly be very comfy at home!

Nana and I got Jackie this cute tub (with an amazing saying on it!) filled with everything baby will ever need for one fabulous bath! Because we don't know if it is Henry or Emma, we had to wait on actually painting the name on....so far everyone (except Uncle Steve!) says it is a boy, even our manicurist! I treated Jackie to a mani/pedi yesterday and the woman there looks at Jackie and says, "80% you are having a boy!" In just a few months we shall see!!!
April 17th will be here before we know it!!!

A Night Out With The Girls!

My great friend, Angie invited me out to a local BAR for a girls night out! We met up there Friday night around 9ish...wow, I was sure feeling old as I would much rather have been in my bed then, but once I got there I had a blast! Good conversation, good drinks, great friends! Who could have asked for a better night???

Here is Christa, Jess, Ang, me, and Nicole...gotta love the red cups that WERE full of a fabulous mix called a Juicy Peanut...not exactly sure what is in em, but they sure are good!!!

Lets Go....Rangers???

Dan bought tickets to see the New York Rangers play the Blues in St. Louis months ago! He was so psyched when he first bought them as the Rangers were playing REALLY well (Dan could quote their actual win/losses, but me, not so much!) Anyhow we invited our friends Jeff and Erin (Erin is actually my doctor and helps Dan tremendously with call and such when Dan needs a few hours or a few days off!) Anyhow, I haven't been to a Blues game in years and I don't really follow hockey too much, but it was actually fun! The Rangers lost 2 to 1, but considering they have "tanked" as Dan puts it, he was thrilled the Rangers even scored 1!

Our seats were high, but they were right on the center line (is that even the right term?) so we could see everything!!!
Thankfully Jeff and Erin were not camera shy and allowed me to snap a picture of them for my blog....KATIE, this one is for you!
And here are Dan and I, enjoying a child free Monday night!!! Gotta love his Rangers hat!!!

Playing catch-up!

Luke woke up with pink eye this morning so I got an unexpected day off! I have been able to catch up a bit with my blogging as I have been slacking lately! I still have one more post to do from the Blues game we went to last night, but I also started cleaning out closets and have small messes all over the house! Happy Reading!

A truly AMAZING race...

So I have been a fan of the Amazing Race ever since Dan and I moved back to IL and my parents were hooked on it (as with all other reality tv shows!) Anyhow, my sister, Jackie, and I always talk about being on the show together...we watch and discuss who would do which challenge, etc.

Well, this season, they have a 22 year old man, named Luke, who is Deaf. He is racing with his mom, Margie! On Sunday, after my Zumba class and Jack's basketball practice, we headed home, ate dinner, gave the boys their baths/showers and sat down to watch. It was SO cool...we were all sitting their cheering on Luke and Margie and, the best part was that they actually came in first place. I guess I'm just totally emotional b/c I just started crying when Phil, the host, signed, "You are Team 1!" I know I'm not Deaf, but I felt so connected to the Deaf world at that exact moment, having had 2 Deaf children! It was truly AMAZING! I know we will be tuning in every Sunday night!!!

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

After the BIG party on Friday night, our Valentine's Day was a bit quieter. Nana had sent over the boys' Valentine's gifts from her and Papa. Luke loved his Elmo book and Lego car (so much that he wouldn't even sit still long enough to get a picture!) Nick felt too cool in his Power Ranger morpher! And Jack was THRILLED to receive his cool Pokemon cards!!!
Dan and I got the boys a movie (in preparation for our trip to the East Coast this summer!) Our gift to each other was our great new mini van with a DVD player...yep, we FINALLY just got one! Jack got Mary Poppins b/c of his love for Superkalifrajilistic...., Nick received Madagascar 2 and we bought Space Buddies for Luke b/c of his LOVE for dogs...he signs and says "dog" whenever he sees one!!!!Dan and I got to go to the winery with good friends, Bob and Angie and Lisa and Mark for a murder mystery dinner so Ms. Kristin and Maddie spent the evening with Nick and Luke. Jack decided he wanted some one on one time with Nana and Papa so he spent the night there! We did manage to get a picture with Dad and his boys...
And me and the boys before we got all dolled up to go.... (the boys are eating their Reece's Peanut Butter cup heart!)
Kristin and Maddie surprised the boys with these HUGE cookies from a great little bakery near our town! Jack posed with his before he went to Nana and Papa's house! Notice he is wearing his basketball jersey? He had a game Saturday and is getting better and liking the sport more and more with each passing week!
Another great day spent with family and friends! Who could ask for a better Valentine's day???

Happy Birthday, Buka!!!

Friday, the 13th was a very special day in our house...Luke turned 2. I was fortunate enough to be off of work (thanks to parent teacher conferences on Tues. and Thurs. nights!) and got to take Luke to CID for Family Day...I got to hang out in his class from 9 - 11! It was great! We even brought cupcakes to share with his class!

Friday night we celebrated Luke's birthday with a "ROCKIN'" birthday party! Nana and Papa brought over a real record player and we rocked out to fab 50's music! We chomped on hamburgers and fries and of course, our Peggy Brown cake (2 acutally, that looked like records!)
Here we are getting ready to sing to the Birthday boy...
The cake had been cut and Luke was ready to eat!!! (Notice his Born to Rock t-shirt?) He had a few changes throughout the night as any true rocker does!!! :)
Of course after dinner and cake, it was present time! Luke's favorite present by far was his Elmo from his two teachers, Ms. Laycee and Ms. Cindy!!! Here he is opening another Elmo themed gift from his two favorite teachers! Luckily Luke had lots of helpers...Daddy, Jack, Nick and our great friends, Cam and Syd!
After all the presents were opened it was time to DANCE!!! Here Cam and Syd bust a move with the birthday boy!
No rockers could party without their guitars and shades...so all the kids received some in their goody bag! It made for a great time, as all the adults sat around watching the energetic little ones rock out!
Here Luke posed for a quick minute with a girly pink guitar...tough men wear pink though, I've heard!
We did manage to snap a quick pic of our family...well, and Elmo!!!
And one final "shout out!" to Uncle Steve who managed to party down, even though he was feeling a bit under the weather! Hope you are feeling better!!! :) Gotta love Nick's energy!!! :)
All in all one great day and one great little boy!!! He continues to amaze us each and every day! We love you, Buka!!!

Build a WHAT???

Our great family friends Maddie and Kristin gave the boys Build-A-Bear gift cards for Christmas and it was just a few weeks ago that we were able to get out to use them! No bears were made by my boys though. Jack chose a T-Rex, Nicholas snatched up a zebra and our little Luke picked an elephant!

Luke LOVED the stuffing machine...he stood there and laughed and laughed...it was great to see!
After all our furry friends were stuffed, the boys took the time to brush and blow dry their new buddies.
Of course we created the birth certificates for them...Nicholas named his Batman clad zebra "Batman," Jack's T-Rex was "Spunky" and Luke's elephant is "Peanut."
Maddie did end up making a bear, a little blue one that she named "Swimmer" after her favorite guy Michael Phelps! Here everyone poses with their new stuffed animals!
And so ended our day at the mall!!! We did have a great time!!! Thanks Maddie and Kristin for a great gift and afternoon!!!

Mac and Cheese, Blueberries and a Book!

Jack is now in the first grade and is responsible for writing a book for the Young Authors Program. He has had his book written in his mind since we were given the assignment last month, but Saturday was the day he put his idea to paper. It really turned out great. I'm going to take it to school tomorrow to laminate it and use our binding machine to bind it. Jack is so proud of himself and I honestly can't believe he did everything by himself!
The book did take quite a while to do, especially since Jack tends to be a bit OCD and I would even say he is a perfectionist...I wonder where he got that from? :) Anyhow, I realized that Nick would be happy watching Power Rangers, but I was worried about what to do with Luke, so that Jack could concentrate! Luckily Luke wants to do everything that his big brothers are doing, so first he decided to color....
...and then for all who know Buka, know that he is BY FAR my best eater so, I did what all moms would have done and fed him some good ole mac and cheese. But, he didn't just eat one package of Easy Mac...
He ate two!!!!
He finished off his lunch with some blueberries...another fun time waster was moving all these blueberries from their bowl that I had put them in after I washed them, to his beloved "penguin bowl."
By the time Luke was finished, so was Jack...what a great way to spend a sick Saturday at home!

Happy Birthday Nana and Aunt Joy!

Yesterday we celebrated my mom and her twin sister's birthday...at Nana and Papa's house and she sure did make a GREAT lasagna! Thanks, Nana! I have been sick since Wednesday and Aunt Jackie and Uncle Steve were getting back from a short roadtrip to Paducah, KY for a friend's engagement party (congrats Cheryl!) so Nana graciously offered to have her birthday dinner at her house!

Here are the birthday girls! Jack asked me how old they are...I told him that I wasn't sure and he comes out with, oh, they are 5?, b/c last year they were 5?. What a smart boy! ;)
Here Uncle Gene and Nick pose...
Nana and Papa...still such a cute couple!
Aunt Joy, me, Aunt Jackie and Nana all pose...notice who is on the tv in the background? We were so engrossed in watching the interview with the pilot that landed the plane in the Hudson River that we sang, "Happy Birthday" and opened presents and such quickly on commercials! (Doesn't Jackie look cute? She is at 30 weeks and baby is definitely growing!)
The boys helped the birthday girls blow out their candles. Notice that Luke is missing? Poor guy didn't get a nap yesterday until like 5...so he missed out on the candles but awoke just in time to eat! :)Happy Birthday to two wonderful women! I can honestly say that I am the woman I am today b/c of the two of you and of course, your wonderful mom, Grandma Trumpet! (Love ya, G!)

A walk, a nap and a poem!

Buka is FINALLY better. He actually didn't puke all morning on Sunday, so we headed out to Aunt Jackie and Uncle Steve's house for a pre-Super Bowl party. Just as we had planned, Luke spent the time there sleeping in his old crib that will soon be a warm comfy bed for his new little cousin! I went for a walk with the girls while Dan played Guitar Hero with the boys! We headed home after the first quarter, so it definitely wasn't a late night!

As I was checking my e-mail though before I wrote this blog post, I read my CID newsletter and found this great writing! I have read it before, but honestly, it makes me cry every time! I certainly live this everyday of my life, especially with Luke and oddly enough, I wouldn't change a thing. Enjoy!

Is it He who chooses these moms?
Erma Bombeck, well-known author

Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures, and a couple
by habit. This year, nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of special needs children. Did you ever
wonder how mothers of special needs children are chosen?
Somehow, I visualize God hovering over earth selecting His instrument for propagation with great care
and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger. “Armstrong,
Beth, son. Patron saint, Matthew.“Forrest, Marjorie, daughter. Patron saint, Cecelia, “Rutledge, Carrie,
twins. Patron saint…give her Gerard, He’s used to profanity.” Finally, he passes a name to an angel and
smiles, “Give her a special needs child.”
The angel is curious. “Why this one, God? She’s so happy.”
“Exactly, “ smiles God. “Could I give a special needs child a mother who does not know laughter? That
would be cruel. “But has she patience?” Asks the angel. “I don’t want her to have too much patience
or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wear off, she’ll
handle it.
“I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence that is so rare and so necessary in
a mother. You see, the child I’m going to give her has his own world. She has to make it live in her
world and that’s not going to be easy.” “But, Lord, I don’t think she even believes in You.”
God smiles, “No matter. I can fix that. This one is perfect. She has just enough selfishness.”
The angel gasps, “Selfishness? Is that a virtue?”
God nods. “If she can’t separate herself from the child occasionally, she’ll never survive. Yes, there is a
woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn’t realize it yet, but she is to be
envied. She will never take for granted a “spoken word.” She will never consider a “step” ordinary.
When her child says “Mama” for the first time, she will be present at a miracle and know it! When she
describes a tree or a sunset to her blind child, she will see it as few people ever see creations.
“I will permit her to see clearly the things I see….. Ignorance, cruelty, prejudice…and allow her to rise
above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life because
she is doing my work as surely as she is here by my side.”
“ And what about her patron saint?” Asks the angel. His pen poised in mid-air. God smiles, “A mirror will
suffice!”
